Project Overview
Africa Future Energy Network (AFEN) is a youth-focused, impact-driven organisation committed to accelerating Africa’s transition to clean and sustainable energy by empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. As a newly established network aiming to build a strong and credible presence, AFEN required a cohesive and compelling brand identity that could clearly communicate its mission, values, and vision with both confidence and clarity across digital and print platforms.
The objective of this project was to design and deliver a complete visual identity system, beginning with the conceptual development of a distinctive and meaningful logo, and extending to a comprehensive brand guideline that ensures consistency in all communications. This identity was carefully crafted to embody AFEN’s core values of sustainability, youth empowerment, collaboration, integrity, and innovation, while also reflecting a forward-thinking and professional image.
The final brand system was designed to resonate with a wide and diverse audience, including young professionals, students, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and international partners, ensuring that AFEN can effectively engage, inspire, and position itself as a trusted voice and catalyst in Africa’s clean energy ecosystem.

The Challenge
AFEN began its founding phase without a defined visual identity, operating within a sector where credibility, trust, and clarity of purpose are essential. This created a unique challenge: developing a brand that could genuinely connect with young people—its core audience and community—while also projecting the level of professionalism and authority needed to engage governments, academic institutions, and international energy organisations. Striking this balance was critical, as the brand had to feel both relatable and aspirational without compromising on credibility.
At the same time, the identity needed to communicate a complex and multi-dimensional mission. AFEN sits at the intersection of youth innovation, pan-African collaboration, and the urgent push for a clean energy future. Translating this into a visual language required more than just strong aesthetics; it demanded thoughtful, concept-driven design where every element—form, color, typography, and symbolism—was intentionally crafted to reflect meaning. The result had to be a brand that not only looks compelling but also clearly expresses AFEN’s purpose, values, and long-term vision in a way that is both accessible and impactful.

- Designing for a dual audience — young innovators and institutional stakeholders — without compromising either appeal
- Translating abstract concepts (collaboration, lattice energy, diversity) into a clean, scalable visual identity
- Building a full brand system from scratch within a tight 1-week timeline

Our Strategy & Approach
The strategy was built on a purpose-led design approach, ensuring that every visual decision was directly aligned with AFEN’s mission, values, and target audience. It began with a detailed discovery phase that explored the organisation’s goals, the broader clean energy landscape in Africa, and the need to balance youth appeal with institutional credibility.
From this foundation, the concept of lattice energy emerged as a guiding idea—symbolising the strength that comes from diverse individuals and stakeholders working together toward a shared goal. This concept shaped the logo, which features four circular forms converging around a central energy bolt to represent collaboration and collective impact, while a multi-colour palette reflects Africa’s diversity and unity. Building on this, a structured and cohesive design system was developed, including logo guidelines, colour definitions, and typographic hierarchy, all compiled into a comprehensive brand guide.
Every element was carefully refined to ensure clarity, consistency, and scalability across all applications, from large physical materials to digital platforms.

Designed with scalability in mind, the identity is flexible and durable, allowing AFEN to grow its presence, expand its partnerships, and strengthen its impact across Africa and the global clean energy landscape.
